Resources

  • There are countless resources at RIT to help you succeed. The resources listed on https://mycourses.rit.edu are a great place to start.

  • Please do not share course materials, including lecture notes, assignments, or recorded lectures, outside of this class without explicit permission. This helps protect intellectual property and ensures that all students have equal access to course content.

Office Hours & Appointments

  • For now, office hours are by appointment, both formal and informal.
  • I keep my calendar pretty much up-to-date on Exchange, but it’s sort of terrible for scheduling. So - drop me an email, and we’ll work something. This all works best if you propose some times.

Attendance

  • Show up.
  • If you miss more than 3 classes / labs I reserve the right to fail you.
  • Miss the first day and I reserve the right to drop you from the class and admit someone on the wait-list.
  • To be excused from an exam, project deadline and the ilk2 you must arrange with me at least 24 hours before the exam is scheduled or work is due.
  • Anyone missing an exam who has not been excused will receive a 0.
  • Make-up exams must be scheduled within the week following the exam.

Recording

  • On occasion, we’ll be seeing materials that are sensitive or proprietary. Therefore, please do not record lectures or labs without my explicit permission.

Lateness

  • Work presented late and without prior notice will receive a 0.

Extra Credit

  • There is no such thing as extra credit.
  • This applies to this class, and, amazingly, to life in general.

Plagiarism

  • Any act of plagiarism will result in a failing grade for the course and whatever procedures / processes I am obligated to undertake on behalf of the department, program, college, and university.
  • I take this pretty seriously.
  • If you’re not sure if something is plagiarism, ask.
  • Passing off generative AI work as your own is plagiarism.
  • It’s OK to use those tools where appropriate, and, in fact, they are quite useful.
  • But trying to pass the work off as your own is uncool.
  • Credit your coauthors.

AI Policy

This Stuff Moves Too Quickly

The AI policy landscape is changing rapidly. What follows is my current thinking as of January 2026. If you are uncertain or unclear about anything related to AI use in this course, please reach out to me directly for clarification.

  • There is no doubt some ever evolving college-wide policy on AI3 use in coursework.
  • In this course we may be using those tools in various intentional ways.
  • However, unless explicitly stated otherwise, any work you submit must be your own.
  • If you use AI tools to assist in generating content (text, code, images, problem solutions, etc.), you must clearly disclose this in your submission.
  • Proper attribution should include:
    • The name of the tool used.
    • A brief description of how it was used.
    • Any prompts or inputs provided to the tool, if applicable.
  • Failure to disclose the use of AI tools will be treated as plagiarism and will result in a failing grade for the course.
  • If you are unsure about whether your use of AI tools is appropriate, please consult with me before submitting your work.

Professional Conduct

  • Please treat everyone in this class with respect and kindness.
  • Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
  • Specific expectations include:
    • Phones: Silenced or off.
    • Laptop use: Only for class-related activities, note taking, coding, research, etc.
    • Side conversations: I can’t believe I have to point this out, but it’s terribly rude to talk while someone else is talking. I especially do not appreciate conversations during your fellow students’ presentations.
    • Arrive on time and stay for the duration of the class. If you must leave early, please let me know beforehand.
    • If you have any concerns about the classroom environment, please feel free to discuss them with me.

Communication and Turnaround

  • Use Slack
  • If it is urgent, email.
  • I try to respond to emails within 24 hours during the week, but may take longer on weekends.
  • Assignments will be graded and returned within two weeks of submission.

Slack

  • All that harsh-seeming stuff being said — generous swaths of slack shall be cut to those who exhibit respect for the learning process and the class in general.
  • Please don’t abuse this tolerance.

Finally

Take care of yourself. Feel free to reach out, I’ll do my best to get back to you. We’re all busy and have to prioritize things. Rest assured you are one of those priorities —
